Friday Food Survey!

It’s Friday!  My brain is totally in weekend mode, and I just want to hang out and enjoy the beautiful weather.  Since I can’t do that and I really love filling out surveys, I filled out this food survey that I saw on Clare’s blog Fitting It All In!

Coke or Pepsi?

Growing up, I would drink a TON of diet coke, now I don’t really drink much pop at all.

Lemonade or Fruit Punch?

Fresh lemonade please!  I rarely drink either of the two, but something about lemonade screams summer.

Caramel Apple or Cotton Candy?

Caramel apple, cotton candy is like eating air…

Butterfinger or Snickers?

Snickers.  I remember digging through my Halloween bag just to find the snickers, they were like  gold!

Pudding and Jell-O?

I would have to say pudding.  I haven’t had Jell-o in years, but chocolate pudding was always a tasty treat!

Turkey or Chicken?

Currently?  Neither…

American or Provolone Cheese?

Provolone, especially on French onion soup!

Crackers or Cookies?

Depends on the crackers.  There are some pretty delicious crackers out there.

Pretzels or Chips?

Pretzels.  Haven’t had them in a while, but I love the dark super salty version…dipped in chocolate.

Mexican food or Japanese food?

That is tough!  I am going to go with Japanese simply because of Sushi.

Chinese food or Italian food?

Italian.  I love mozzarella and fresh tomatoes with some fresh basil…so light and crisp!!

Pie or Cake?

This one really depends on the situation…I enjoy both!

Ice cream or Cookies?

I LOVE baking cookies all the time, but can rarely turn down an offer to ice cream.

Fro Yo is kind of like ice cream 😉

Pasta or Pizza?

Pizza!  And as a special treat, a super thick crust…I love crust!

Soda or Juice?

Hmmmm….neither really?  How about water??

Chocolate Bars or Chocolate Truffles?

Chocolate truffles, they are fancier, richer, tastier, and just better!

Apples or Bananas?

Toughy!!! I love both!! So I can’t choose 😉

Salad or Soup?

Salad for sure!

Cauliflower or Broccoli?

Another toughy!! I would say cauliflower though…even though I love both!

Onion Rings or French Fries?

Again haven’t had them in forever, but onion rings.  I am an onion girl through and through.

Blizzard or McFlurry?

I am going to have to go with Blizzard on this one…top two flavors…Pumpkin Pie and Banana Cream Pie, yum!

Fried or Poached Eggs?

Poached.  My mom can make a perfectly poached egg…I have tried maybe twice and failed at both attempts, but they taste good!

Crepes or Pancakes?

Pancakes!  I LOVE pancakes for breakfast because you can make so many different kinds, healthy or not.

Hashbrowns or Roasted Potatoes?

Roasted potatoes for sure…with ketchup.  My mom makes really great fried breakfast potatoes too…they go well with the poached eggs.

Oatmeal or Cereal?

Oatmeal for sure, I eat it everyday!  How could I not pick it!

It’s Not Spaghetti…It’s Squash

My walk to work this morning was brisk.  It truly felt like a fall day, and for some reason I didn’t feel the need to wear a jacket as I walked out of the door.  That was a big mistake, the wind was blowing and my hands and body were freezing.  Luckily, the store that I work in is actually pretty warm.  Many people complain of it being too warm, but I think it is just right 😉

The fall weather lately is a nice change of pace, but I just need to prepare for it before heading out.  I did however break out the riding boots!

I bought these around this time last year and literally wore them almost everyday throughout the fall and winter.  They are good quality, wear/age well, are cute, and above all else…are comfortable!  I was worried that it was too early in the year to bring the boots back, but with the weather in the 50s this morning they were definitely appropriate.  After all, it is September.

Lunch

On my way to work, I snacked on a homemade larabar (made with peanuts instead of almonds) to hopefully tide me over until I got off work at 2:30pm.  Because I was working a shorter shift than my usual 7 or 8 hours I automatically thought that I wasn’t getting a lunch break, so I didn’t even pack anything.  Well, I was wrong.  I got a lunch break, and I was hungry for lunch.

I usually don’t really like spending money on food to just eat for lunch without it being a special occasion, and I didn’t want anything super greasy or that would weigh me down too much, so I opted for the black bean soup at Panera with a whole grain baguette on the side.  The soup was super warm and was the perfect amount…and the meal only cost $5!  I guess I don’t go out much, but I expected it to be more.

 

Dinner

After walking home and making some phone calls that have been on my to-do list for a while, it was time for dinner.

When Brian and I were at his parent’s house for his mom’s birthday, his mom gave us a ton of leftovers and produce, including a spaghetti squash!

I was so excited when she gave this to us because I had seen my mom eat it a couple of times in my childhood, but I had never tried it.  The taste of the squash didn’t disappoint and it was very easy to prepare.

First, I scooped out the “guts” and the seeds just like a pumpkin. (It even smells like pumpkin)

I then put water on to boil.  It never actually boiled because the pot was so big, but once it was hot gently placed both squash halves in the hot water for 18-20 minutes.  (I accidentally left the sticker on…)

I then pulled out the squash and started scraping the insides with a fork…and the “spaghetti” strips just came out of no where!

It was seriously like magic.

I then mixed in some steamed cauliflower and spinach and topped it with homemade pasta sauce and a touch of sriracha.  This meal was very filling, I could barely finish my plate!  This meal will definitely be added to the list of repeated items 🙂

Do you repeat recipes or have any “signature” recipes everyone expects you to make?  Or do you try out new recipes all the time?

  • I would definitely say that I am always experimenting with different recipes, but occasionally I will repeat specific recipes for various occasions (chocolate chip cookies always get made for Grandpa!)

Happy Harry Potter Day!

This morning, I woke up late because I (again) went to bed later than planned so I made a smoothie to-go this morning to drink in the car.

In the smoothie:

  • 2/3 banana
  • 1/2 cup strawberry
  • 1/2 cup almond breeze
  • pinch of xanthum gum from Good Earth Natural Foods
  • 1 handful of spinach
  • 2 splenda packets
  • 1 Tbsp of Krema natural peanut butter
  • Ice and water for volume
It was a little chillier this morning than it has been, so the smoothie made me a little cold.  Unless it is scorching hot outside, and I am sitting in the heat smoothies always make me cold.
Tonight at midnight (so technically tomorrow) the FINAL Harry Potter movie comes out!!  I am going with my sister and Brian to the movie tonight at an IMAX theater…I know, fancy.  Because I love themes and because I love making treats, I made some Harry Potter themed treats to share with you!
Pumpkin Pasties:
Ingredients
  • 1 Box Spiced Cake Mix
  • 1 Can 100% Pureed Pumpkin
  • 1 Can of Cream Cheese Frosting, or Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting
Preparation
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Mix together the entire box of cake mix and the entire can of pumpkin until combined.  Drop the dough by spoonful onto an un-greased cookie sheet.  Place in the oven and bake for 10 min.  Allow to cool on wax paper before frosting.  Once cool, cut the cookies into the same size round shapes (I used the mouth of a white wine glass).  Then turn the cookies upside and frost their bottoms, and stick two together to make a sandwich!  These are the easiest cookies ever and make great non HP related treats too!
I am off to rest, since I will be watching Harry at midnight.  Don’t worry, I have another HP inspired recipe for later too!
