Dig-IN A Taste of Indiana

Yesterday was a beautiful, warm, sunny day in downtown Indianapolis.  It was perfect weather to spend downtown, outside at the third annual Dig-IN A Taste of Indiana event.  

 

Brian and I purchased tickets to this event all the way at the beginning of the month.  I saw a discount for it on Twitter, read about what the event actually was, and Brian made the immediate impulse purchase of the tickets, but I am sooo glad that he did!

Dig-IN is an annual event that “demonstrates that investment in Indiana food and agriculture, through education, experiences and  conversation, benefits our community and economy.”  This event truly showcased and advocated the slow food lifestyle while featuring local food and food growers, while providing educational speakers about food from local food producers and experts.

Not only was this event educational and tasty while celebrating Indiana’s farmers, it was simple!  All that we did was purchase our ticket in advance, check-in, receive a wristbad, and a passport telling us what was at each station and where each station was.  Once we were in, each taste was included in the ticket price.  The only extra thing that needed to be paid for were full glasses of beer and wine, but tastings were complimentary!

 

We met up with Kegan and Tori for our afternoon full of Indiana eats.

 

As we entered, it was almost overwhelming.  There were so many booths, we didn’t really know where to start.  We were extremely hot, and the first thing we saw was a frozen treat that we immediately gravitated toward.

 

The treat was a blueberry buttermilk popsicle from Nicey Frozen Treats, and it was so good!  Very creamy, and very delicious.

 

We then wandered on to sample more things.  Brian found some chicken and noodles.

 

I then saw some homemade maple syrup, and rather than trying a sample, I tried to listen in on what sounded like the recording of a commercial!

 

Best Boy & Co had some delicious chocolate sauces and barbeque sauces.  My favorite was a hot mustardy sauce…it tasted like mustard pretzels!…and my second favorite was the chili hot fudge.  The chili hot fudge was so smoky and flavorful, yet sweet at the same time.  Yum!

 

They even had eco friendly spoons for us to sample with.

 

Frittle Candy offered a tasty selection of peanut brittle with sesame seeds.  It was nutty, tasty, crunchy, and sticky.  The mini treat was so simple and cute all the way down to the brown boxes with their logo stamped on it and their mini business cards.  I loved it!

 

The wine cake mix samplings.  It was very tasty (we tried the strawberry), and I felt pretty clever since I had done this myself before with just a regular box of cake mix!

 

We then wandered around to the back of the park, and Brian heard a familiar voice.  We popped inside the tent with the Dig-IN Speaker Series to see one of our classmates and his friend from Butler, Kristin Hess!

 

She is pretty awesome and worked with David Hoppe to create a book called “Food for Thought:  An Indiana Harvest.”  This book really captures the personality of Indiana food through stories and beautiful photos taken by Kristin herself.  It was really a neat experience to sit in and listen to them both speak so candidly about their experiences gathering these stories and photos from Indiana food growers and producers.  I definitely want a copy of that book!

After listening to Kristin, it was time to head to the wine tent.

 

Not only were tastings included in our ticket price, but we got nice, glass Dig-IN wine glasses to take home.

 

Then, it was time for some food truck action.  Brian’s favorite dish came from a food truck called Spice Box that featured Indian dishes.  The dish served yesterday was Channa Masala, a sample of spiced chicken and chickpeas.

 

My favorite came from this little food truck, Duos.

 

It was a potato, mustard greens, and goat cheese quesadilla with salsa verde.  All of this was served on a whole wheat tortilla.  Seriously, it was soooo good!  I think I am going to try to recreate it at home sometime 🙂

 

We then sampled our way through some more wine and delicious eats.

 

Zest! Exciting Food Creations, Indianapolis featuring house-made ricotta with peach and white corn puree topped with Twisted Sistaz popcorn made exclusively for them by Just Pop In!.

 

These cookies were by Just Rennie’s Cookie Co. and they were seriously the bomb.  They were soft and delicious, and so gooey.  They were really, really good.  Out of the three flavors sampled, the Cranberry cookies were my favorite.  I think I am going to recreate that recipe too!

 

We then stopped at the Traders Point Creamery booth.  I have eaten at this restaurant once and want to take Brian their because I know he will love the delicious cheese.  This farm is completely organic and raises their own grass fed cows, pigs, and organic free range chickens.  Their sample was a delicious gazpacho…so good.

 

I started to chat with one of the ladies at their booth, who happened to be the marketing manager.  She gave me a block of their famous Fleur de la Terre cheese to sample, and boy is it delicious.  The taste is slightly sharp, salty and just plain good!  I made sure to save some to experiment with in a recipe this week.

 

Fermenti Artisan featured their fermented garden krout with capriole and farms old Kentucky Tomme (goat cheese).  Tasty.

 

Our last taste of the day was at Black Swan Brew Pub’s booth.  I seriously have to take my mom and sister there when they visit next time.  Their sample was the Black Swan Signature Reuban, and it was so good.  I requested mine without the meat and was seriously impressed by the delicious flavor of the entire little sample.

 

They built the sandwich right in front of us, then torched the top to melt the cheese.  How cool is that!?

 

All in all, Dig-IN was an amazing experience and way to showcase Indiana food and agriculture, and I cannot wait to go back next year!

Weekend Full of Events

Hello friends!

Sorry for the slight blogging hiatus.  This weekend was action packed with a lot of fun activities, and a little bit of behind the scenes blog work (more on that later this week!).

Saturday started out with my Body Pump class.  I am getting more comfortable with Pump each week, and I find myself adding in more little jokes, singing a bit more, and just having more fun with everything overall.  I absolutely love starting out my weekend with this amazing class and workout.

 

After teaching Pump, I headed over to visit Brian at an open house for the student run dental clinic that he is a part of.

I was able to meet the dean of his program as well as some of his class mates.

 

The facilities were so new. I was very impressed by how nice everything looked.

 

 

Once we were done with the clinic open house, it was time to shower and clean up for the evening.  We had not one but two cookouts to attend.  The first cookout was for Brian’s clinic group in dental school, and the second was for our friend, Tori’s, birthday.

 

 

 

 

It was a perfect night to be outside, so the cookouts were great to have as our evening plans. At the dental school cookout, everyone brought a different dish, and there was such variety!  I brought my homemade hummus along with some veggies and pita chips.

 

There were so many things to sample, I didn’t know what to pick.  The dessert table looked pretty darn tasty, so I kept my pickings pretty small in order to save room.

Celery with some corn and bean salsa, corn chips, potato salad, more veggies, cheese, and some plantains.  Yum!

 

After our food settled, Brian and I shared some goodies from the dessert table.  Not quite sure what everything was, but there was a little chocolate and peanut butter goody…that little gem was by far my favorite!

 

After chatting and hanging out for a bit, we then headed over to Tori and Kegan’s house.  We were happy to celebrate Tori’s birthday, but we were super excited to meet the newest member of their family…

We spent the evening chatting outside, drinking a little wine and just relaxing…so perfect!

 

Sunday

I made sure to limit myself to one small glass of wine last night early in the evening because I knew that I was heading out for my long run today.  9 miles was on the agenda, it felt oh so good to check it right off the list!

 

I then made a delicious breakfast of carrot cake pancakes for Brian and I (recipe coming soon..), showered up and got ready for the day.

 

Brian and I had plans to attend Dig IN-A Taste of Indiana with Tori and Kegan.  This event showcased Indiana growers and their high quality dishes in sample sized bites in the beautiful White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis, IN.

This event was so amazing, and I can’t say enough great things about the people, the food, the atmosphere, about everything…so I will be dedicating an entire post to this wonderful event later in the week 😉

 

 

After Dig-IN, Brian and I were definitely ready to go home.  We ran a couple of errands, then came back home to prepare for the week.  We weren’t exactly starving for dinner, but we needed a little somethin’ somethin’ in our bellies, so I whipped up some veggie and cheese plates.

 

The cheese was from Trader’s Point Creamery.  Trader’s Point is an organic dairy farm in Indianapolis, IN.  They had a booth with delicious gazpacho soup at the Dig-IN event, and while we were in line I think that we just hit the lucky spot because the marketing manager just happened to be standing there and gave us some cheese to take home to sample!  You know how I feel about free things…

She didn’t just give us any cheese, she gave us some of their famous Fleur de la Terre.   This cheese was slightly salty, and had a slightly sharp flavor…so delish!  I made sure not to eat it all and save some for a recipe later in the week 😉

After such a busy and fun weekend, I am more than ready for a good night’s sleep.

My New Favorite: Frozen Cherries!

Last night was a pretty simple and great night.

After arriving home from work, I immediately changed my clothes so that I could get between 7 and 8 miles in on my running log.  My time wasn’t that great, there were lots of stops and starts due to stop lights, but I logged 7.5 miles.

Due to a kind of wacko schedule, I have been completing my long runs in Friday evenings after work.  When it comes to working out, it is ALWAYS easier for me to do in the wee hours of the morning…so running after a full day of work is tough for me.

In order to prepare for my long run during the day yesterday, I made sure to do a couple of things thanks to some comments on a post on the Fitfluential Running Board:

  • Eat well throughout the day. (I packed extra snacks so there was no chance that I would be hungry or lacking energy)
  • Drink plenty of water. (I tried to drink a full large Tervis of water every hour!! Boy did I go to the bathroom a lot!)
  • Get up and move around. (I tried to get up and move around when I filled my bottle each hour.)

I think all of those tips were great, and I felt much better than last week when I went for my evening run.

After the run it was time for dinner (gotta refuel!) and grocery shopping.  It was just a quick trip to the store to purchase some veggies, cheese, eggs, and Greek yogurt.

 

Then, it was time to relax…such a nice, stress free evening!

Breakfast

While at the grocery store yesterday, I had the urge to purchase something new.  Frozen cherries.  I have seen them in the stores many times, but I never thought that I would like them so I never purchased them.  Well, I saw a little recipe that Runner’s World tweeted yesterday that called for frozen cherries.  The recipe sounded delicious…so I bought some, and boy am I glad that I did!

Seriously, those little gems taste like sweet sweet candy and I could probably eat the entire bag in one sitting!! Yum!

I made sure to incorporate them into my smoothie this morning:

 

  • 1/2 cup frozen cherries
  • 1/3 frozen banana
  • 1 cup unsweetened original almond milk
  • 3/4 scoop protein powder of choice
  • 1/4 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp instant coffee
  • 1 packet Truvia
  • ice cubes for thickness

The cherries gave the smoothie a creamy milkshake-like texture and it was OH SO GOOD!  I just kept mmm…mmm…mmm..ing my way through it 🙂  Thank goodness Brian wasn’t awake so I didn’t have to share with anyone 😉

Workout and Afternoon Plans

Now, I am off to practice Body Pump then teach it.  Then, Brian and I are headed out for a super secret surprise trip…don’t worry, I will tell you tomorrow!

Cravings All Over the Place

After teaching my Saturday morning Body Pump class, Brian and I got all gussied up to head to a wedding of two of Brian’s childhood friends.

 

This was some dangerously delicious punch made by the groom’s mom.  It tasted like pineapple juice, but I have a sneaky feeling there was a little something secret hidden in there 😉

 

I love attending events in Brian’s hometown with his childhood friends because I am always meeting new people.  At Butler, Brian and I very much hung out with the same group of people.  I knew his friends and he knew mine, and on a lot of points…the crowds just mixed!  These new people are fun, welcoming, and they are becoming not-so-new anymore!

 

The couple was happy and I know they will have an amazing future together 🙂

Breakfast and Work Day Sunday

This morning, my taste buds and brain were all over the place.  I hope that is not a prediction of how productive my day is going to be!

Did I want sweet?  Always.  Did I want peanut butter?  Yes.  Did eggs sound good?  Of course!

In order to satisfy all of my cravings, I made a little breakfast sampler platter of sorts.  Some egg whites (with one whole egg) and spinach topped with salsa, apples topped with some almond milk and cinnamon, half of a whole wheat english muffin with a little dab of peanut butter.   YUM!

 

Now, it’s time to hit the grocery store (yay!), cook up some food for the week, get some computer work done, and hopefully have time to relax!

Heading to Florida

Hello and happy Saturday!

I hope all is going well with you, and you are doing something really fun with your favorite people 🙂

Today has been a pretty jam packed day…for a good reason though!  Tonight I am leaving for a family vacation to Florida in honor of my younger brother’s graduation from college.  Because I have been so busy with work and teaching group fitness recently, I literally have not had a spare second to think about packing (or maybe it’s the fact that I truly hate the packing process…)

That being said, I started this morning bright and early with a delicious bowl of what I like to call Monkey Oats!


The Monkey Oats were chocolatey, peanut buttery, bananay, and just plain good!

Monkey Oats

  • 1/3 cup oatmeal
  • 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 stevia packets
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 sprinkle cinnamon
  • 1/3 banana
  • 1 Tbsp peanut butter

Directions:

Place the oats in a microwave safe bowl with 2/3 cups water.  Microwave for 1 minute.  Take the oats from the microwave and mix in cocoa, stevia, protein, cinnamon, and about 2/3 cup more water.  Microwave for about 1 minute and 30 seconds, or until the oats are the desired consistency.  Top with bananas and peanut butter…and enjoy!!

Workout

After my oaty breakfast, I spent the morning reviewing my Body Pump notes.  I was a little nervous for class today because I was teaching the latest release all by myself for the first time!  The class was great, I had so much fun, and I only made a couple of minor mistakes…nothing to sweat about!

After teaching that class, my brain officially went on vacation mode!! I came home to make myself a quick lunch, and Brian had a little surprise waiting for me.

For the past 10 days, Brian had been in London and Ireland with his mom and aunt visiting family (yes I know…I was only slightly jealous he was in London right before the Olympics!)

Brian bought me a couple of souvenirs, the first being an Irish wool sweater!  I absolutely love being warm and cozy all the time, and love bundling up in big chunky sweaters, so when Brian asked what I wanted while he was on the trip, I jokingly said I wanted a wool sweater…I guess he didn’t get the joke 😉

I love it!

He also got a cool Olympic backpack from London!  We are definitely taking it with us to Florida.

After present time, it was time to get down to business.  Brian cleaned our little apartment, and we packed a whole weeks worth of stuff into one bag…

That’s right…ONE BAG!  We are driving to Florida, and in the car will be my mom, dad, Brenna, Brian, and me.  There is very limited space, so we had to be flexible…luckily it is summer, meaning our clothes are small and can easily be rolled up.

The trip down to Florida should be interesting considering we have three adults in the back seat of the car…and my dad hates making pit stops…wish us luck!!

Nowhere Near Perfect

This weekend at home was honestly much needed and pretty awesome.  Call me crazy, but I love hanging out with my mom 🙂

She made me yummy food like fish tacos.  Seriously, these are so so so good…don’t worry, I asked her for the recipe.

We ate baby tomatoes from her garden.

 

We went running on Sunday morning.

 

I prepped my food for the week.  The tofu is covered with the same stuff used for the tilapia fish tacos.  It tastes good on the tofu, but better on the tilapia.

 

More food prepping…

 

Mom made another delicious dinner.  This time, it was grilled shrimp served on top of a giant salad.

 

Perfection

 

I had a pretty big revelation this weekend.  Mom and I had a big talk after dinner about my life, and the perfection I was striving for.

Recently, I have been trying too hard to be perfect…at everything…and I was literally driving myself crazy because it is impossible to be perfect.

I joined the Savage girls thinking that would make my eating habits perfect and my body perfect, when all it really did for me was add this unbearable stress all the time because I am not perfect…in fact I am no where near it.

I tried to keep up this perfect image on the blog, only showcasing the great workouts I did and the healthy meals I ate, not truly talking about my feelings or the days when all I wanted was a giant bowl of ice cream.   I wasn’t being real, and I wasn’t being me.

Working on the cruise taught me a lot of things in regards to healthy eating, healthy living, the environment, and how the chemicals in our world are affecting our bodies.  While working on the cruise, one of the things that I would do was educate others on this “clean living, detoxification, no impurities” lifestyle.  Because I was educating them on this perfect way to live, I wanted to be exemplary and not hypocritical so I tried to lead this “perfect” lifestyle, when really it was probably the farthest thing from perfect that I have ever experienced.  When I came home and tried to control things and be even more perfect, I feel like things spiraled out of control.

When I think about the people that I truly look up to, whether they are fitness instructors, bloggers, or whatever…the reason that I look up to them is because they do what they do well, but they are authentic.  They let people inside to see the real them and all of the flaws included, and although I aspire to be like these people…showcasing my flaws was the last thing that I ever wanted to do.

When I was in Body Pump training, we had to write down what we loved about our favorite instructors.  Without a hitch, without a second thought, the first thing that I wrote down was that I like to see them make mistakes.  Now, that doesn’t mean I want my instructors to flub the whole class, but to hear them accidentally cue “squat for 2/2….actually I mean super slow!” is refreshing to me….because I know that person is real and human…just like me.

I have been working so hard to do everything 100%, do everything perfect, and it was turning me into a robot.  What kind of a life is that?  I wasn’t enjoying time with friends, I wasn’t just sitting back and relaxing, I wasn’t ever taking a night off, I wasn’t living my life…and that takes a lot of work.

So, from here on out I want to be true to you, true to my group fitness classes, true to my family, true to Brian, true to my friends and be the real ME!  The real me is someone who loves to eat healthy, try new recipes and workouts, who loves ice cream and chocolate, who loves to bake for EVERYONE whenever there is an opportunity, who hopes to inspire others to try a new vegetable or workout for an extra 30 minutes.

Now, this doesn’t mean that I am going to go and eat a big old McDonald’s hamburger with all the toppings, a large fry, soda, and a chocolate milkshake on the side…because that is not me either.  But, if a friend calls me up and asks to meet up for ice cream or a drink, I am not going to stress because it wasn’t in the “plan.”  I am going to be so happy to see that friend and truly enjoy my time with him or her.

It is crazy how it suddenly hit me last night, but I am so HAPPY that I finally realized what was wrong in my life.  A saying that I heard once that will always stick with me is “Everything in moderation, including moderation”  Hello!  How brilliant is that?!  Thank you to whoever came up with that, because I need  a little moderation on my “moderation.”

So, here is to Monday and starting off the week on a new foot.  Boy, does that feel good!

Rough Ride Home

I am home for the weekend in Fort Wayne, but I did not have an easy road getting there last night.

 

 

That would be my car, with a giant flat tire on the highway.  Luckily, it didn’t cause any accidents and I was safely able to pull of the road.  Shortly after I pulled to the side, a kind police officer stopped to help me out, call the tow truck, and wait with me until everything was finished.  He even stopped traffic on the highway to get everything moved over into the far lane.  What  great help he was!! I couldn’t thank him enough.

After my adventure on the highway, I finally ended up at home about an hour later than planned.  Thankfully, my mom had a delicious meal of salmon, sweet potatoes, and veggies all plated up for me and ready to go.  I was hungry and the food tasted good!

My mom made a new rub for the sweet potatoes and salmon that is to die for!  Don’t worry, I got the recipe and will share later 😉

 

My mom and I then spent a good portion of the evening trying to photograph our dogs…we finally gave up and deemed them both cute in person, but horribly un-photogenic!!

 

This Morning

Today, Mom and I got up nice and early to head to a diner owned by one of her friends.  Literally, they just reopened the doors on Tuesday!!  I’ll go into more detail on Minnie’s diner in a later post 😉

We both had veggie omelettes, mom’s with a side of potatoes

 

and mine with a side on plain oats.  I seriously think that was on of the biggest bowls of oats I have ever seen!  Tasty, but I couldn’t finish it.

 

We then ran a couple of errands including mailing a package to a special giveaway winner (yes, I know the giveaway was a while ago, but we have been in contact and she understands!)  It should be there by Monday!

 

Next on the agenda was Body Pump.  I had to have a sub teach my class for today in Indianapolis, but I made up for it by attending class as a participant this morning.  I upped my weights today…and all I can say is OUCH!!! (in a good way of course!)

 

Then, it was time to head home, shower, and eat some lunch.  For me, lunch included tuna with some low fat cottage cheese, cucumbers and carrots, some leftover sweet potatoes from last night, and grapes and berries.  So summery and tasty!

 

 

Now, I am off to get a new tire for my car, meet up with a friend, and mom is at a baby shower.  Enjoy your Saturday!
