Let the Packing Begin

Posted on

Yesterday started out bright and early with a 30 minute elliptical warm-up at the gym followed by a strength training workout focusing on my legs.  I must admit that after running 7 miles the day before…my legs were a tad bit tender.  After the workout there was plenty of foam rolling to ease some of that muscle soreness.

I then came home, quickly (very quickly) showered, got ready, and whipped up three egg whites, and apple and a tablespoon of peanut butter.  I forgot how much a really like apple and peanut butter…it seems like ages since I have last had it.

Brian and I then headed out to get my car fixed.  It had been shaking a lot while I was driving it and making this weird popping noise, and the engine light was on so Brian and I decided it was time to take her to the shop.

While my car was at the shop, Brian and hung out with his mom at Einstein’s bagels.  They enjoyed onion bagels with veggie cream cheese while I sipped on an iced coffee.

It was then time to head to the outlet mall.  Brian and I are going to be taking our engagement photos in about two weeks! (I can’t believe it is coming so soon!) and Brian wanted to pick up a couple of new shirts.  I have been wearing the same shoes for running, teaching group fitness, and just about everything under the sun since October so I was in the market for a new pair of group fitness shoes and a separate pair of running shoes.

The pair of shoes that I got for group fitness I really love.  They are the Adidias Fly By W.  According to the information provided online they are very breathable and for a person with a neutral foot position (that’s me!) that wants lightweight cushioning.

I wore them on a walk with Brian last night and thought they felt great!  The pair that I bought for running I have read a lot of mixed reviews about.  They are more for someone who needs a very sturdy/stiff shoe who overpronates.  I don’t fall into that category and don’t want to risk being in pain when I run.  I am going to think about it a bit more, but I may return them.

We then went to pick up my car, which she now works like a charm, and then got back to the apartment to start packing.

It really wasn’t that bad once we finally got started.  Now, I am just ready to get everything boxed up and be done with the whole process.

While Brian and I were unloading the drawers and cabinets in our living room Brian found something…the last Easter egg!

I hid that one 😉  Must have been a pretty good hiding spot if it took us two months to find it!

We then had leftovers from the night before for dinner and headed out to walk around the city.  The weather is so nice and warm, there was no way we couldn’t take advantage of the beautiful night.

Today

Today was another early day for me.  I started by working on another component to my “special project.”  Here is a hint as to what part of this project is.

Buckwheat pancakes for breakfast with a special blueberry sauce.  They were both delicious and tasted great together.

Now, off to teach a spinning class and pack pack pack!

I hope you all have a wonderful Saturday!

Top Things About Fall

This morning, I woke up early with Brian to help him review for his exam.  This will be the last monthly exam of his that I am here for!

Breakfast was a delicious fall apple with peanut butter and coffee 🙂

After Brian was off to his exam, I went on a 4 mile run and then completed a workout that was Pinterest inspired!

Because I ran 4 miles, I skipped the 100 jumping jacks and the 10 minutes of running at the end, but I did everything in between.  The leg lifts were hardest for me!

It seems like I have been talking a lot about the seasons, but I love season changes and I just can’t help it 😉

The crisp fall mornings lately have reminded me of all of my favorite things about fall.

Fall Favorites:

Boots.  If I had my way, I would have boots in every color, height, ankle boots, you name it.  I love books 🙂

Fall decorations (even though I didn’t put any up this year!!)

Mom’s “Fall Mix”

Bright colors on all of the trees

The crunching noise when running or walking through fallen leaves.

The smell of turning the heat on for the first time in the house (this is a weird one!)

Scarves…I love being cozy!

Pumpkin…everything 😉

Garlic Pumpkin Pasta

Pumpkin Buckwheat Bowl

Pumpkin Muffins

What do you LOVE about this season???

No More Insanity Workout

Posted on

It is Saturday morning, and many of you are probably sleeping in.  I wish I could say that I have missed my evening post yesterday because I was busy  doing something super fun and cool, but unfortunately I was just working all day and night.  Likewise, my day today will also be consumed by work 😦

I’m sad because the weather is such an “Indian Summer” right now.  The trees are bright, vibrant colors but the temperature is literally in the 80s!

Workout

I was pretty tired this morning when I first woke up, and wasn’t in the mood for another Insanity video, so I created my own little at home workout routine.

No More Insanity Home Workout Circuit

This workout requires no equipment and can be done while traveling, at home, or even at the gym!

  • Start with 2-3 rounds of Karena and Katrina’s Best Ab Workout Circuit (ToneItUp.com)
  • 10 pushups (the girly kind are acceptable, but try to push yourself with the full out version!)
  • 10 tricep dips on a chair, bench, whatever you have available
  • 10 pushups
  • 10 tricep dips
  • 30 jumping jacks
  • 15 rear delt flies (lie on your stomach, spread your arms out wide on the floor and point your thumbs up toward the ceiling.  Slightly lift your arms off of the floor by squeezing your shoulder blades together.
  • 30 jumping jacks
  • 15 touch downs (lie on your stomach, bring arms straight in front of you above your head, gently lift the upper body, bring arms down into 90 degree angles or “touchdown” position for one rep.)
  • 30 jumping jacks
  • 15 one arm tricep pushups, on each side
  • 30 jumping jacks
  • 15 side lying lift and lowers (stack your legs and lie on your side, prop yourself on one elbow, put the other arm on your waist, lift and lower your hips for 15 reps)
  • Switch sides
  • 30 jumping jacks to finish it off!
This workout will tone your abs, arms, and back while giving you short bursts of cardio to get that heart rate up 🙂
Breakfast
For breakfast I had another bowl of buckwheat, but I added a little something different to the mix today.
In addition to an apple and a tablespoon of peanut butter for some healthy fat and protein, I added 1/4 cup of Fiber One 80 Calorie Honey Squares for a little crunch.  Let me just tell you, this cereal is good.
If you are the kind of person who loves Honey Grahams or putting crunchies on top of ice cream, fro yo, or any yogurt I think that it is imperative that you run out to try this now.  Trust me 😉
After work, Brian and I are headed to an engagement party for one of his family members!

I LOVE anything having to do with weddings, so it should be a good evening 🙂

Monumental Labor Day

Today was a “monumental” day in Indianapolis.  In the center of the city, there is a place called Monument Circle, which is literally a traffic circle with a giant monument in the center of it.

source

They took the top portion of the monument “Lady Victory” down to be restored, and it was in the circle today for people to get an up close look.  Apparently, this is the only time we will be able to see it in our life times!  And I got a picture 🙂

There she is!

Dinner

Growing up, and still today, my mom has always been one to make a themed meal for the holiday.  I really wanted to make something summery refreshing and crisp since I feel that Labor Day is kind of the last “hurrah” for summer.  The chilly weather almost steered me away from making a totally summer meal, but I stuck to my guns and went with it.

I made a salad of spinach and romaine lettuce topped with apples, blue cheese, candied pecans, grilled chicken, red onion, and red bell pepper.  So light and delicious!  Just what I wanted 🙂  I topped it with Balsamic vinegar, garlic salt, black pepper, and basil.

Brian and I then went on a little bike ride around a very cute residential area downtown in Indianapolis called Lockerbie.  The houses are so cute, historic, and some resemble brownstones.  It is just a quaint little area, and the nip in the air really made it feel like fall.

One of my faves!

I realize that I forgot to do a Yoga Pose of the Day, but it is a holiday…there will be one tomorrow 🙂

Storm’s a Brewin’

Posted on

Yesterday, a friend of Brian’s from childhood and a friend of mine from my sorority had her white coat ceremony, officially marking the beginning of her journey through medical school.

After the ceremony, she had a cookout celebration at her house with family and friends.  I brought my brownie batter dip to go alongside all of the other amazing dishes there.  There were tons of fruits and veggies…so delicious.

Oliver Winery is an Indiana winery that is about 30 minutes from Indianapolis.  Recently, they started making hard ciders in super cute bottles!  I love hard cider, so these were right up my alley.

Look at the cute bottle!

As the evening went on it became more and more gloomy, but in an exciting and good way.  Ever since I was little I have enjoyed thunder storms.  I like the anticipation of the storm coming and watching them in the distance from my porch or garage or window (whatever’s available).  I am not quite sure why, but I think the lightening and thunder storm dark sky is so gorgeous!

It suddenly got dark

It eventually ended up raining pretty hard, and although Brian and I had plans to go out with some friends last night the sleep bug hit us…all of us…and it hit hard.  So, we ended up spending the night at a friends house!  Oh well, I guess our bodies were sending us pretty strong sleep messages.

Breakfast and Yoga

This morning, I didn’t have a lot of time to fit in a hard workout so I opted for yoga!  I have been reading up on the practice of yoga, I attended a class, and now I just need to make it part of my weekly routine.  After running 9 miles yesterday morning, my legs needed a good stretch so I found a hamstring yoga video on Youtube!  It really felt great to stretch my legs and challenge my body in a different way than intense cardio.

I then made a simple breakfast of frozen fruit and peanut butter.

Apples, bananas, and strawberries topped with PB

It was a relaxing way to start the day 🙂

The weather is surprisingly cool and makes me want to just curl up on the couch in a sweater….too bad I have to work.

Question of the Day:

Do you like thunderstorms or do they give you the heeby jeebies?

Switchin’ up the Breakfast Routine

Posted on

Good morning!

It is another hot and humid day here in central Indiana, which makes me thankful that today I teach my spinning class and do not need to be running outside.

For breakfast this morning, I decided to switch it up and have a Thomas Light Multigrain English Muffin with half of a huge apple and a tablespoon of peanut butter.

It was delicious and filled me up.  Even though I went to bed at a fairly decent time last night I think I am going to have to have a cup of coffee from the Keurig to get me going!

Dirty Little Secret

Posted on

It’s official, I hate running indoors.  I don’t like the treadmill and I don’t like the track, but I still completed another three miles of half marathon training and did arm weights afterwards.

For morning fuel, I had a quarter of a HUGE Fugi apple (what are they putting in those things these days?!) and some peanut butter…Krema peanut butter to be exact.  I love this peanut butter not only for it’s taste, but because the only ingredient is peanuts!  Now that’s how peanut butter should be!

I forgot to take my own food pictures today 😦

For the first 2 miles, I ran something kind of like this on the treadmill:

Minutes Speed Incline
0-5 4 7.5
5-6 6 1
6-9 7 1
9-13 6 1
13-20 6.5 1

After that, I went and ran one mile on the track upstairs.  Then, I completed this arm workout:

  • Flies (lying on back) 7.5 lbs 20 reps
  • Tricep Pullovers (lying on back) 7.5 lbs 20 reps
  • Chest Press (lying on back) 7.5 lbs 15 reps
  • Tricep Kickbacks, one arm at a time 7.5 lbs 15 reps
  • Upward Rows 5 lbs 15 reps
  • Don’t know the name of this one:  Put arms at 90 degrees with elbows in line with shoulders and close arms in front of your face and open 5 lbs 15 reps
  • Overhead press 5 lbs 15 reps
I then stretched, and headed down to the locker room to get ready.  Here is my dirty little secret
I am really good at making myself look like a didn’t workout without having to shower and taking up minimal time (This morning…15 min!!)
Before…sweaty mess
After…Is that the same girl?
I know to some people it might sound a little gross, not showering after a sweaty workout, but when you don’t have time to shower here are some tips:
  • Blow dry your sweaty hair on cool, if you do it on hot you will just sweat more
  • Bring a curling iron to lightly curl hair and get kinks out from your pony holder
  • Freshen up on deoderant
  • Spritz body spray
  • Put on some makeup
  • Pack an outfit that is simple, cute, and comfy…like a dress.  I love dresses because I can just throw it on and the outfit is on!
You may also try a “dry” shampoo.  I don’t have any experience with that, but if I give it a try I will let you know!
After my workout, I had a Fiber 1 bar…these things are seriously like candy too me, don’t want to eat too many though…
I also wore my new shoes for the first time today.  I have to say, they felt great!!  🙂  Gotta love good fitting shoes.
The kids want to go out to lunch today…hope it’s tasty!
