What’s Up This Weekend?!

Posted on

It’s Friday!

I just love the start of the weekend, even if I don’t have anything special going on.  Everyone just seems a little happier, a little less stressed, and a little more relaxed about things.

I started off my Friday morning with a super duper sweaty workout, literally super sweaty.  I did the Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs workout.  Seriously, I was sweatin’.  I quickly cooled off when I took Bella on a walk this morning.  This weather is totally tripping me up.  I can literally see my breath in the morning, but by lunchtime I can wear shorts outside!

Breakfast

I really wanted something that was going to last for breakfast today because I have to work a long shift at work.  Another bowl of buckwheat.

I  mixed a really old and mushy banana into the oats before cooking them, so when they were done cooking they were super creamy and banana flavored!  I also mixed in vanilla extract and a tablespoon of peanut butter.  Mmmmm so delish!  I also had a side of chocolate glazed donut flavored coffee!! Bella’s family has a Keurig (I really enjoyed it last time too!) and they have all sorts of fun coffee flavors 🙂

Question of the day:

What are your plans for the weekend?!  Anything fall themed???

Not Expecting Autumn

Posted on

After seeing the beautiful weather outside the past couple of days, I just had to lace up the running shoes and get out there!  The highs in the afternoon have been in the 80s, but in the morning the weather has been in the 40s and 50s.  So cold that I can see my breath.  This brings up the dilemma of what to wear when working out outside.

Today, I opted for running shorts and a sweatshirt, but it still wasn’t the right combo.  My legs were freezing the first portion of the run, and then I felt like I was burning up after the first 10 minutes.  There just isn’t  a way to balance it, I guess.

Because my knee has been hurting lately I was a little nervous about running, and I actually forgot to wear the knee brace that I purchased to help give me a little extra support.  I set out and told myself that my goal was to run for 30 minutes, and as soon as I felt any sort of discomfort in my knee that I would stop and walk….and guess what!  I never felt any discomfort and was able to complete the entire 30 minutes pain free, thank goodness!

After the run, I walked Bella around the block, then came inside and did Jeanette Jenkin’s 10 minute Booty Bootcamp video again, then did the following:

  • 50 center crunches
  • 10 push-ups
  • 50 crunches on each side
  • 15 bicycle crunches
  • 10 push-ups
Breakfast
Because it is sooo dark until practically 7:45am here in Indiana I definitely ate breakfast before my workout (I woke up around 6am). Since Brian and I are dog-sitting, it was easier to transport buckwheat than it was to transfer all of my frozen fruit and blender so I had buckwheat for breakfast!
The buckwheat was mixed with cinnamon and half of a banana.  It kind of tasted like banana bread!

Not Expecting Autumn

Ok, so it is clearly autumn.  The weather is cooler, the leaves are changing color and falling, pumpkins and cornstalks are adorning each house.  I have purchased and cooked up pumpkin and butternut squash, apples, and started cooking warm soups.

But to me it just doesn’t feel like autumn.  Maybe it’s because this fall is totally different from any other fall has been for me.  Usually I am getting out all of the fall decorations, planning my halloween costume, making trips to haunted houses and apple orchards.  This year is different.  Because I leave in a couple of weeks, I did not get out any fall decor, there is no reason for me to plan a halloween outfit, and I have yet to purchase a pumpkin to decorate and carve.  I have realized that because I am leaving, I mentally planned to not be here for any holidays, and therefore did not anticipate being here for the season change.  But I am here!!  Brian has his big exam on Monday, but after that I am going to plan plenty of fall activities for us to do so I can get out of “season limbo.”

What are some ways you have adapted to the season change?  Decorations?  Special baked goodies?  Visiting an apple orchard?  A fall festival?  Let me know!!!

Why Do YOU Do It??

It’s Friday!

This week has felt a little long to me because I had two days off right in the middle of the week.  I’m the kind of girl who loves a routine so the random days off and inconsistent schedule of working in the retail world kind of trip me up.

After my workout this morning, I had a delicious bowl of fruit and granola.

Apples, bananas, blackberries and granola on the bottom.  Tasty!

Workout

This morning’s workout was another video from the Insanity series.  I woke up with my knee feeling great, so I was ready to test it a little more with some of the high intensity moves.

At the end of the workout, Shaun T (the instructor and creator of Insanity), said that as a fitness professional he sometimes wonders why he does what he does, but then he realizes he does it to look good.  This made me think.

Why do I workout most mornings?  Why do I do what I do?

I would be lying if I didn’t say a portion of why I work out is so that I am proud of the way I look, but that isn’t the only reason.  As an 8th grader (so long ago!) I was in a science group that studied childhood obesity.  We focused on the importance of balanced and wholesome nutrition accompanied by fitness and leading an active lifestyle when educating elementary school children about how to be “healthy.”  It stuck with me.  I know that the working out and healthy diet that I strive for now will pay off years down the road.  I do what I do so that I can live a long, healthy life.  I want to be exercising when I’m 90!

I also do what I do because it makes me feel good.  For me, physical activity is a natural mood lifter.  Whenever I am feeling bad about myself, having a sad day, or am just in a funk the second I begin some sort of physical activity I seriously feel infinitely better.

So, my question to you this morning is Why do you workout???

Things to check out today:

A “Band” New Workout

Good Morning!

This is our first full week of fall!  Because of the chilly temperatures, gray weather, and changing leaves I decided to start the day with a warm breakfast bowl rather than a smoothie.  I am absolutely loving the buckwheat  I purchased.

Along with buckwheat I added:

  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • 2 packets splenda
  • 1/2 banana
The perfect morning fuel!
I actually have today off from work, so I allowed my body to wake up on it’s own rather than setting an alarm form 5am or 6am.  Because I woke up closer to 8am I decided to eat breakfast before working out because waiting until after my workout would throw off my eating schedule throughout the day with having breakfast so close to lunch time.
Workout
Because my knee hurt after the 6 mile run on Saturday, I am going to lay off running today and use an exercise band that my mom got for me!   When studying for my personal training certification, we learned a couple of exercises to do with the band and I am so excited to use it because I have never focused an entire workout on the band.
I want to stick with low impact for my little knee today so if the rain holds up I am planning on going on a bike ride (hopefully Brian wants to join me), and I will probably do a little bit of Insanity abs….I slept in today so I am a ball full of energy!
What new workouts or workout equipment have you tried lately?

Buckwheat Approval

Happy First Day of Fall!!!!

Yesterday, I was at work during the majority of the day so here is what I wore:

After work, Brian and I went downstairs to visit Caitlin and Julie, two of our good friends from Butler who just moved into our building!  We had a little wine, cookies (recipe to come later) and Modern Family.  It was relaxing and great to see good friends after a long day at work.

Breakfast

This morning I decided I would try out the Bob’s Red Mill Creamy Buckwheat Cereal.  I have made buckwheat pancakes before and absolutely loved them, but I didn’t know what to expect from the cereal.

Seriously, this stuff is great! I mixed together:

  • 1/4 cup buckwheat cereal
  • 3/4 cup water

I then microwaved it for 3 minutes and added:

Here are some interesting facts and benefits of buckwheat:
  • Buckwheat is a fruit not a grain and is completely wheat free
  • Buckwheat is a great plant source of protein (5g per 1/4 cup serving!)
  • Rich in lysine, an amino acid that is lacking in many grains
  • Eating buckwheat may keep you fuller longer, because it will keep glucose levels balanced better than other carbohydrates
Hope you all have a great first day of fall and kickoff to the weekend.
This weekend is Chelsea’s wedding weekend!  Gotta go pack!! 🙂

Starting Out Hard!

Today is one of those days where I don’t work until the afternoon.  I was able to wake up when my body was ready, around 7am.  Not only was I ready to wakeup but I was ready to workout hardcore!

Since my 14 day free trial is over at the gym I was using with Body Pump, I thought that a run would be in my best interest…especially since I am running a 6 mile race on Saturday morning.

I didn’t map my run before I headed out because I went on a route that I am pretty familiar with.  Based on previous run times I think I went between 5 and 6 miles.  I then came back and did some ab exercises superset with push-ups.

source

For some reason, push-ups are always so hard for me!  I ended up doing a total of 20 push-ups non girly style, which was hard work for me!  Doing them as a superset made it much easier for me to approach 20 real push-ups.  A superset is when two different exercises are performed right in a row without a break in between.  This is great when you are on a time schedule or are just impatient like me and you don’t want to wait between sets to complete the next.  It’s kind of like exercise multi-tasking. And I LOVE multitasking 😉

Yoga Pose of the Day

Today’s yoga pose is:  Standing Forward Bend

This move is actually hard for me because I have and have always had very tight hamstrings.  A variation on this move is to use a block under your hands in order to keep legs straight.  I did not have a block so I tried to keep my legs as straight as possible!

Benefits of Standing Forward Bend:  Strengthens the feet, knees, and thighs, stretches the hamstrings and calves, improves the function of digestive and reproductive systems, opens the hips and groins, stimulates the liver, kidneys, and digestive system, relieves menopausal discomfort, headache, insomnia, and fatigue, alleviates discomfort from sinusitis.

Breakfast

Ok, so I took a little break from my smoothies this week, but today it’s back!  I couldn’t part from them long, so today a coffeerific mocha peanut butter spinach banana smoothie was the way to go.

Blogging Issues

Ok, so I made a little mistake and didn’t realize that if I began deleting pictures from my media library that they would delete from every page and post that they were on, so if you go to my About Me page or many earlier posts they are photoless…but don’t worry!  I am trying to fix it 🙂

Other Interesting News:

Happy Thursday!

Yoga Pose is Back!!

Body Pump on Monday’s doesn’t begin until 9:25.  There are definitely pros and cons of having it later in the mornings.

Pros:

  • Not worrying about setting an alarm clock
  • Plenty of time to eat breakfast before
  • It is light out and I can ride my bike
  • I can get a couple of things done before class
Cons:
  • I feel a little like I have to wait around for class
  • I miss a good portion of the Today show
  • I really like waking up and banging my workout out first thing
Pros and cons aside…it was still a good and challenging class.

My Body Pump set up

Yoga Pose of the Day
It’s back!  Sorry about the weekend long hiatus, but Yoga Pose is back and ready for action!
Today’s pose is Upward-Facing Dog
**That is my Bic Band in my hair…and I love it!   Really, they don’t slide around.
Benefits of Upward-Facing Dog:  Strengthens the legs, buttocks, torso, shoulders, arms, and wrists, opens the chest increasing lung capacity, stretches the shoulders and back, lengthens the spine and opens the abdominal cavity, stimulates teh digestive and lymphatic systems, improves posture.
Lunch
I then made myself a little smoothie bowl for lunch. Chocolate Peanut Butter to be exact, with a little spinach and banana thrown into the mix.
Work Fashion
And now I am off to work for a couple of hours….this is another one of those days that really feels like three because it is broken up so weird!
