Tabata…Don’t Ya Want Ta?!

Posted on

Breakfast this morning came in the form of creamy, cold, deliciousness…

I had been craving something coffee/chocolate the past couple of days, and this satisfied that craving BIG time!

Mocha Overnight Oats

Makes one bowl of oats

  • 1/2 cup of oats
  • 3-4 oz. of Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 tsp raw cacao powder (can also use unsweetened cocoa)
  • 1 tsp instant coffe granules
  • 1-2 packets of stevia
  • sprinkle of cinnamon

In a cereal bowl,  combine the oats, yogurt, water, cacao powder, coffee and stevia.  Stir until combined.  Sprinkle the top with cinnamon, and place in the refrigerator overnight or for 30 minutes if you want to eat the oats soon!  Remove from the fridge when ready to eat and enjoy!

After having such a satisfying first meal of the day, I was more than ready to tackle a new Boot Camp class that I began teaching this morning.

In this morning’s class, I made sure to include circuit training along with a high intensity interval training technique called Tabata.

What is Tabata?

Tabata is a form of high intensity interval training that comes in short bursts.  One Tabata lasts only 4 minutes!  It is a series of 8 intervals that are only 20 seconds of work at your absolute maximum effort level followed by 10 seconds of rest.  These short bursts of activity work the aerobic and anaerobic systems allowing the body to see gains in strength and speed.

Here is a look at the sweaty workout that we completed this morning:

It was a good workout, got the heart rate going, and the muscles working…all things that I look for when I complete my exercise for the day!

Have You Ever Tried a Tabata Workout?

A Little Bit of Everything

Posted on

Today has been a jam packed day for me.   I have been doing a little bit of everything! After getting some things done around the apartment this morning, I headed off to volunteer with a local arts organization.  Today, I basically just got a tour of the facility and introduced myself at their bi-weekly meeting.  Wednesday, I get to head back to the organization to actually get my hands dirty and help them put the finishing touches on a fundraising event coming up.

After volunteering, I came back and changed my clothes so that I could head to the gym and teach a mat pilates class.  At first, I must admit that I was a little nervous.  I haven’t taught pilates in about a month!  But once I started teaching, everything was fine and I didn’t have any hesitations 🙂

I then headed outside to attend the new BodyPump release!  It was a short class with only four tracks because my gym was doing a back to back launch of BodyPump, RPM, CxWorx, and BodyCombat.  I only stuck around for BodyPump, but the music was great, the atmosphere was amazing, and everyone was completely “pumped.”

It was perfect weather to do the workout outside.   The breeze was like a giant fan..

Last year, Brian ran a 6 mile race with me on the 4th of July, and he told me he wanted to do it again!  Today, was Day 1 of his training program.  We did a little boot camp style weight program then went for his first of many jogs.  What a great way to spend time together!

Nice and sweaty!!

After all of that activity, it was definitely time for dinner.  I quickly baked up some tofu (recipe to come soon!) and steamed some green beans.  Lately, it seems like quick meals are the name of the game for me.

Even though I don’t have a full time job yet, I am still super busy…which I like.  I am constantly substitute teaching fitness classes, meeting with people about future career plans, and applying for jobs.  What can I say, I don’t like a lot of down time.

I hope you all had a great Monday, now I’m off to bed!

Don’t Cry Over Spilled Eggs

Posted on

This morning, I started out with a quicky boot camp style workout that I used to teach on the cruise ship, but I added in some jumping jacks and finished it off with my favorite abdominal youtube video.

I then showered up to get ready for the day, and while I was making breakfast for Brian, this happened:

Oops!! There goes the rest of our eggs!  Luckily, I had already started making Brian’s eggs 😉  otherwise he would have been out of a breakfast!  Looks like I will need to run to the store today…

Also luckily, I was not planning on having eggs this morning because I had prepared my morning meal last night.

Overnight Oats!

Strawberries and Cream Overnight Oats

  • 2/3 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup Almond Breeze
  • 1 scoop vanilla pea protein powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix will.  Set in the refrigerator overnight, uncovered.  In the morning, chop up one cup of strawberries (I used frozen) and combine all together.

It will taste like heaven in a bowl 🙂

I have a couple of things to get done around the apartment, but then later this morning, I am meeting with my sister to help her go apartment shopping.  I haven’t seen her in over a week, so it will be great to spend time with her on another sunny, hot day in Indianapolis.  (I think the weather man said that the high today beats the high in ORLANDO, FL!!!)  Overall, today is pretty full.  I have another meeting later this afternoon, and this evening, Brian and I are headed to Happy Hour at the Symphony…two of my favorite things smashed together in one event.

Have an amazing hump day!

Florida Weather in Indy

Posted on

I am loving the constant sunshine, it completely lifts my mood 🙂  The weather is unseasonably warm here in Indianapolis, and it seriously feels like Florida!

Here is a recap of how Brian and I spent the day yesterday.

Because the weather was sooo beautiful, I was able to convince Brian to go for a run with me.  Typically, Brian doesn’t enjoy running because he gets a little bit bored, and he doesn’t really enjoy  trying to hold a conversation with me while running.  So, this time he thought that he would try running with music!

We have our head phones in for some music inspiration!

As we were running, I had us do a couple of put stops to incorporate some strength training into our jog.

Stop 1:  Step Push-ups

Place hands on a high step, with the body in a straight line (no booties in the air!).

Lower the body down toward the step while keeping the body in a straight line.  Complete 15 repetitions.  (We did this two different times).

Stop 2:  Stair Run

Run up and down a steep flight of stairs a couple of times to switch the dynamic of simply running on the flat ground.

The workout was fun to do together! (at least for me) and a great way to take advantage of the wonderful weather.

We then came back, showered up, and had some lunch.  On the menu were salads full of:

  • Spinach
  • Romaine
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Guacamole
  • Onion
  • Salmon
  • Salsa

We then headed to Brian’s parents house to drop off some storage containers and things that we don’t currently need at the apartment.  When we walked in the door, we were greeted by this beautiful flower arrangement!

Brian’s mom has been taking a flower arranging class, and made this arrangement!  Isn’t it pretty?!  I was very impressed 🙂

Brian’s parents also found us a bird cage to use at the wedding for our guests to put cards in.  I think that this bird cage is the perfect look, it is exactly what I had envisioned when I pictured having a bird cage at the wedding.

We then headed to the store to pick up some home gym equipment.  5 lb dumbbells and a foam roller.  Before working on the cruise, I had never used a foam roller and  did not fully understand the importance of it, but after having a therapeutic massage for my super tight muscles (despite stretching and yoga classes daily), I realized the importance of releasing the fascia beneath the skin.

Brian and I then headed to our friend’s house for another little cookout, but I didn’t take any pictures 😦  I was, however, able to see many of my friends that I hadn’t had a chance to see since my return home.  It was a chill and fun evening, and it was so good to see all of my friends!

This morning, I started my day with a boot camp workout. On the cruise, one of the specialty classes that we would teach was Body Sculpt Boot Camp.  The class was a four day workout program.   In each day four different exercises are completed by simply using your body and one dumbbell.  This workout is great because it can be done virtually everywhere!

After the boot camp workout, I did my foam rolling with my new roller.  Since I have been running more lately, I can already feel the tightness creeping up in my IT band and my hamstrings, so although it hurt…this morning it felt “good” to roll out the pain.

I then had a delicious smoothie for breakfast to fuel me for the day.  Today’s mix included:

  • 1 cup frozen blackberries
  • 1/3 frozen banana
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 1/2 cup Almond Breeze
  • 1 scoop Sunwarrior protein powder
  • splash of water
  • 3 ice cubes
  • 1 1/2 tsp peanut butter to top it off

What a delicious and creamy way to start the day.

It is almost the weekend…what do you have planned?

Crazy Schedule

Posted on

Yesterday was very successful!  I was able to unpack everything I needed, organize my clothing making room for all of the new goodies from Brian’s mom, clean up and organize our closet, and organize the bathroom closet.

After all of the cleaning and organizing, I needed a break, so Brian, our friend Caitlin, and I headed outside to the perfectly sunny and slightly windy weather for a little boot camp workout lead by yours truly!

We did a small circuit with a minute of each exercise three times:

  • Bench step ups
  • Knee to chest plank
  • Tricep dips

We then ran 3 miles together, and then I ran another 3 by myself!  The workout was fun because we were outdoors and in good company 🙂  That always makes a good workout go by fast.

Nice and sweaty from our workout!

We then showered up, ate some random food because there wasn’t anything to really make a meal and then headed to the grocery store.  We weren’t done at the store until 10pm…it was 7:30pm when we headed to the store, which gave us a late start to begin with so we were very tired by the end.  Going to the grocery store after being gone for a while is always the most expensive trip ever!  So, even though I spent more than planned, I was able to stock up on some essential items that we were lacking in the cupboards.

This morning, I started out bright (or should I say dark) and early with the Insanity Max Interval Sport video.  I had done the insanity workouts at the beginning of last summer and honestly got a little bored with the program, but because I don’t have a gym membership yet and I am not teaching group fitness yet, the workout did the body some good.  I then followed the workout with a little bit of ab work:

  • 50 crunches
  • 50 clam crunches
  • 50 toe touches (to the ground to target lower abs)
  • 50 bicycle crunches
  • 50 oblique crunches
  • 10 oblique reach throughs on each side

It was great to get back on track and start the day with a major sweat session.  Today, I have a couple of meetings, but the big thing on the agenda is organizing the kitchen!  That will feel good to get done 😉

I then had a delicious breakfast of oatmeal, berries, Sunwarrior, and Krema peanut butter.

While there is always a time and place for the traditional Skippy or Jif peanut butter, to me, there is nothing that beats the peanutty taste of Krema peanut butter…and what are the ingredients??? Peanuts!  That is it, and I think that is my favorite thing about this kind of peanut butter, no added oils, salts or sugar because they are sooo not needed.  If you haven’t tried this kind of PB, then you do not know what you are missing 😉

I am trying so hard to get on a schedule that is somewhat normal, but right now I feel it is almost impossible to do so!  Things just keep popping up and the next thing I know it is 10pm!! Somehow I will get this whole schedule thing figured out.

Have a wonderful Tuesday!!

What is on your to-do list today???

What is going to be your workout??
