A Little Bit of This or That

Posted on

Good Morning!

Can you already believe that it is hump day?  It seems as though this week is flying, and I am not complaining one bit about it!

Before heading to the gym to teach my Yoga Sculpt class this morning, I had an interesting first meal of a glass of almond milk (so good!), two plain rice cakes with some Laughing Cow cheese, and some unpictured egg whites.  Usually I crave something sweet first thing in the morning, but this meal totally hit the spot and gave me plenty of energy to teach.

A white but tasty meal

Survey

Do you remember surveys???  Back in the day, I used to love filling out the surveys with all of my information and the e-mailing it to my entire address book of friends!  I still love surveys to this day.  I love reading about other people, and I love answering the questions.  So, when I saw this little survey on Courtney‘s blog and on Clare‘s blog…well I just had to join the club 😉

1.Run/workout in the heat and humidity or freezing temps and snow?

It really depends on the situation.  I am resuming my half marathon training this week, and usually run my races in the summer.  On the fourth of July this year, Brian and I ran a 6 mile race in 90 degree heat and humidity…and I hit a personal record!  Who would have guessed?  On the other hand, when it is winter, as long as the sun is shining, the snow is glistening, and I am dressed appropriately, I love a nice brisk snowy winter run.

2. Have washboard abs or flat abs?

Does this mean to look at or have?  To be realistic, I would have to say flat…I don’t think I could ever have anything near washboard abs due to my body type.

3. Dr. Oz or The Doctors?

Before I had my day job, I had plenty of time to catch  up on my daytime TV, but now I don’t have time to even watch night time TV.  I guess I will say Dr. Oz because I haven’t really ever watched The Doctors.

4. Cardio or strength?

Tough one!  I love the high and adrenaline rush I get while doing hard core cardio, but ever since I started lifting heavy weights on the cruise, I have started getting a high off of that too!  I gotta say both 🙂

5. Cravings: Protein or carbs?

I would probably say carbs J  At least recently, I always love a good bowl of oatmeal, fruit, veggies…but I try to incorporate some form of protein at every meal!

6. Jillian Michaels or Bob Harper?

Recently, I have really been getting into Jillian Michaels.   She has some amazing podcasts that are very informative, and share her opinion but don’t push it on you.  They are great to listen to in the car on the way to and from work.

7. Frozen Yogurt or Ice Cream?

Although I love both, I am going to have to go with Frozen Yogurt.  I love the self-serve and adding my own toppings!

Fro Yo is kind of like ice cream 😉

8. To train: Upper body or Lower body?

I totally neglect my lower body, which I need to change.  I think I see quicker results in my upper body, therefore, I train it more often…

9. Protein powder or food with protein?

Food with protein is always the top options, and I try to get most of my protein from fish, eggs, and dairy.  There are sometimes though that I like to eat foods that don’t have a lot of protein in them, like smoothies and oatmeal.  When I enjoy these foods, I will add protein powder to supplement the protein that the meal is missing.

10. Lunges or squats?

Oh! Tough one!  They both hurt, but I am going to say lunges because for me I think they are harder, so I like to work at them more.

11. Sweet or salty?

Can I say sweet and salty?  I love a good trail mix!! However, if I am just craving something, it is probably going to be sweet 🙂

12. Workout attire: cute or comfy?

Cute.  I really like to have matching outfits, and especially when I am teaching I like to look halfway decent and not like I rolled out of bed.  Feeling like I look good always motivates me to work harder and do better!

13. Body Pump or Heavy lifting?

I have recently been working to become certified to teach Body Pump, and I love it!  However, when I complete my own workouts, the majority of the time I do heavy lifting rather than the lighter weights with higher reps like Body Pump.  I find that I am able to get stronger that way, and increase my weights in Body Pump more frequently.

14. Yoga or Pilates?

Pilates.  I used to hate yoga, then I had to learn a format and teach it on the cruise!  I will say that Yoga feels great, but if I had to pick a class to go to it would for sure be Pilates.

15. Nike or Adidas?

Well, currently, one pair of shoes is Nike and the other is Adidas.  When it comes to workout clothing though I usually pick things up at Target, Marshalls, or TJ Maxx!

16. Running on the treadmill or outdoors?

Honestly, I get so dizzy on the treadmill it is usually just not even worth trying more than walking on the darn thing, however!, Monday I tried a new kind of treadmill and was able to complete three miles!  I will always prefer running outdoors.

17. Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s?

I absolutely love both!  They are both a bit of a drive from where I am currently living, so it is like a special treat when I shop at either one.  I love the selection at Whole Foods, and I love the prices and specialty products at Trader Joe’s.  What can I say, I love ‘em both!

18. Summer or Winter Olympics?

Summer for sure.  I am loving the gymnastics, diving, swimming, a touch of running…basically it is all awesome!

20. Steamed veggies or roasted veggies?

Roasted.  I love roasting up veggies with onion and garlic pieces for lots of flava!

Now it’s on to you!!

  • Do you prefer strength or cardio?
  • Do you prefer cute of comfy workout gear?

Heading to Florida

Posted on

Hello and happy Saturday!

I hope all is going well with you, and you are doing something really fun with your favorite people 🙂

Today has been a pretty jam packed day…for a good reason though!  Tonight I am leaving for a family vacation to Florida in honor of my younger brother’s graduation from college.  Because I have been so busy with work and teaching group fitness recently, I literally have not had a spare second to think about packing (or maybe it’s the fact that I truly hate the packing process…)

That being said, I started this morning bright and early with a delicious bowl of what I like to call Monkey Oats!

The Monkey Oats were chocolatey, peanut buttery, bananay, and just plain good!

Monkey Oats

  • 1/3 cup oatmeal
  • 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 stevia packets
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 sprinkle cinnamon
  • 1/3 banana
  • 1 Tbsp peanut butter

Directions:

Place the oats in a microwave safe bowl with 2/3 cups water.  Microwave for 1 minute.  Take the oats from the microwave and mix in cocoa, stevia, protein, cinnamon, and about 2/3 cup more water.  Microwave for about 1 minute and 30 seconds, or until the oats are the desired consistency.  Top with bananas and peanut butter…and enjoy!!

Workout

After my oaty breakfast, I spent the morning reviewing my Body Pump notes.  I was a little nervous for class today because I was teaching the latest release all by myself for the first time!  The class was great, I had so much fun, and I only made a couple of minor mistakes…nothing to sweat about!

After teaching that class, my brain officially went on vacation mode!! I came home to make myself a quick lunch, and Brian had a little surprise waiting for me.

For the past 10 days, Brian had been in London and Ireland with his mom and aunt visiting family (yes I know…I was only slightly jealous he was in London right before the Olympics!)

Brian bought me a couple of souvenirs, the first being an Irish wool sweater!  I absolutely love being warm and cozy all the time, and love bundling up in big chunky sweaters, so when Brian asked what I wanted while he was on the trip, I jokingly said I wanted a wool sweater…I guess he didn’t get the joke 😉

I love it!

He also got a cool Olympic backpack from London!  We are definitely taking it with us to Florida.

After present time, it was time to get down to business.  Brian cleaned our little apartment, and we packed a whole weeks worth of stuff into one bag…

That’s right…ONE BAG!  We are driving to Florida, and in the car will be my mom, dad, Brenna, Brian, and me.  There is very limited space, so we had to be flexible…luckily it is summer, meaning our clothes are small and can easily be rolled up.

The trip down to Florida should be interesting considering we have three adults in the back seat of the car…and my dad hates making pit stops…wish us luck!!

TGIF!

That is all that I can say…well, I guess I can say a little more 😉  I am so thankful that it is Friday, because that means that Brian comes home tonight.  He has been traveling for the past 10 days with his mom and Aunt to visit some of their family in London and Ireland.  He has had an amazing time, and I have loved hearing his stories…but I will be glad to have him home!

Breakfast

This morning was started with a super chocolatey smoothie that was super huge…I had a hard time finishing it!

Super Huge Peanut Butter Chocolate Smoothie:

  • 2/3 frozen banana
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 scoop protein powder of choice (I chose Sunwarrior)
  • 1/2 cup cold coffee
  • 2 stevia packets
  • 1 large tsp of raw cacao (or unsweetened cocoa powder)
  • 2 tsp peanut butter
  • ice until it gets to be the right consistency (mine took about 6 cubes)

Simply put it all in the blender and voila!  Breakfast is served.

Reading Recommendations

Tomorrow evening, my family (Brian included) is driving down to Florida for my younger brother’s graduation.  I still have not packed a single thing, or made my packing list…oops!  But I have been thinking about what I would like to read while on the trip.   For me, it is a always a bit difficult for me to find a book that I truly get into…but once I get into a book, I can’t put it down.

Some of my recent favorites have been:

  • The Pact by Jodi Picoult
  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
  • Dear John by Nicholas Sparks
  • Accidentally Overweight by Dr. Libby Weaver
  • The Hundred Year Lie by Randall Fitzgerald

That being said, I am looking for a great book to take on the trip with me that I will be able to finish on the trip…because if I bring it home, I won’t pick be able to pick it up again until next summer! (ok maybe I’m exaggerating slightly)

I really like thriller, romance, self-help, informative, health related….

What are some of your summer reading suggestions???

Super Secret Sample and Bananay Oats!

Posted on

Last night, one of the frequent travelers to one of the hotels that I work at brought in a little surprise.  He has been traveling to Indianapolis for months now working on this project and  I got to try some before it even hit the shelves!

Sorry I can’t say what it is, but it will roll out October 1 🙂  It was a fun little way to spend one of my long days at work.

Breakfast

Yesterday, I was a complete slow-poke in the morning….for absolutely no reason at all.  Today, I want to start things off right and get where I need to be on time without completely rushing around like a crazy person.  I helped myself out a bit by preparing my breakfast last night…overnight oats that taste like banana bread!

Instead of peanut butter I put a teaspoon of homemade cashew butter…so good…and I put some frozen bananas in the mix last night.  When I woke up, the bananas were all mushy, and the perfect consistency to mash around in my oat bowl.

The result was a thick, creamy, sweet, bananay bowl of goodness.

Workout

This morning I teach my cardio intervals class.  I usually change the workout, but I have been keeping the same format throughout the entire summer.  There are eight exercises that get completed for one minute each.  During that minute, I want my class (and me!) working their little hearts out to the best of each person’s ability.  We then take a quick water break, go back to the top and cut out the last exercise, so we only complete seven the second round, then six the third, five the fourth, and so on…

The class loves the format and always tells me how quickly class goes by!

I can’t believe that it is Thursday already!! EEK! Tonight, I am team teaching a Body Pump class then I have lots to do to prepare for the weekend…wish me luck and have a great day!

Torch Cupcakes and a Cafe Misto

Posted on

Last night, after being extremely tired and getting home kind of late due to an evening Body Pump class…I remembered that I had committed myself to make cupcake torches for an evening reception at one of the hotels that I work at.  The reception is Olympic themed…and me being the theme-lover that I am thought it would be a GREAT idea to make these cute cupcake torches that I saw on Pinterest…

They look a lot better than I thought they were going to turn out.

They are just cupcakes made in ice cream cones and topped with orange and yellow swirled icing.

The difficult part…transporting them.  I finally got them in the box, but now I am worried about getting them out for the event tonight!

They look good, although I was tired and not really in the mood to frost a ton of cupcakes last night.  The process, however, was a tad bit messy…

All in a day’s work!

Breakfast

Last night I prepped a bowl of overnight oats with some raw cacao (chocolate) action along with almond butter.  I recently made a batch of chocolate almond butter that tasted just like brownie batter…that is the flavor I was going for this morning.  It didn’t quite taste like brownie batter…but they did taste pretty darn good!

I then taught my usual Tuesday morning spin class, and got ready super fast afterward so that I could head to Starbucks and publish this post!

I decided to treat myself with a tall Cafe Misto with a side of banana bread sample.  The misto was a great decision, the banana bread was good…but mine is better 😉

This was my first time trying a Cafe Misto, and I am so glad that I did.  They are a great swap for a latte because they are about $0.50 cheaper and have slightly less calories.  I got mine plain, but you can add a syrup pump if plain is too boring for you.

Now, I’m off to work!

Have a great day!!

P.S.  Thank you so much for the kind comments and support from yesterday’s post.  It means more to me than you know!!

Nowhere Near Perfect

Posted on

This weekend at home was honestly much needed and pretty awesome.  Call me crazy, but I love hanging out with my mom 🙂

She made me yummy food like fish tacos.  Seriously, these are so so so good…don’t worry, I asked her for the recipe.

We ate baby tomatoes from her garden.

We went running on Sunday morning.

I prepped my food for the week.  The tofu is covered with the same stuff used for the tilapia fish tacos.  It tastes good on the tofu, but better on the tilapia.

More food prepping…

Mom made another delicious dinner.  This time, it was grilled shrimp served on top of a giant salad.

Perfection

I had a pretty big revelation this weekend.  Mom and I had a big talk after dinner about my life, and the perfection I was striving for.

Recently, I have been trying too hard to be perfect…at everything…and I was literally driving myself crazy because it is impossible to be perfect.

I joined the Savage girls thinking that would make my eating habits perfect and my body perfect, when all it really did for me was add this unbearable stress all the time because I am not perfect…in fact I am no where near it.

I tried to keep up this perfect image on the blog, only showcasing the great workouts I did and the healthy meals I ate, not truly talking about my feelings or the days when all I wanted was a giant bowl of ice cream.   I wasn’t being real, and I wasn’t being me.

Working on the cruise taught me a lot of things in regards to healthy eating, healthy living, the environment, and how the chemicals in our world are affecting our bodies.  While working on the cruise, one of the things that I would do was educate others on this “clean living, detoxification, no impurities” lifestyle.  Because I was educating them on this perfect way to live, I wanted to be exemplary and not hypocritical so I tried to lead this “perfect” lifestyle, when really it was probably the farthest thing from perfect that I have ever experienced.  When I came home and tried to control things and be even more perfect, I feel like things spiraled out of control.

When I think about the people that I truly look up to, whether they are fitness instructors, bloggers, or whatever…the reason that I look up to them is because they do what they do well, but they are authentic.  They let people inside to see the real them and all of the flaws included, and although I aspire to be like these people…showcasing my flaws was the last thing that I ever wanted to do.

When I was in Body Pump training, we had to write down what we loved about our favorite instructors.  Without a hitch, without a second thought, the first thing that I wrote down was that I like to see them make mistakes.  Now, that doesn’t mean I want my instructors to flub the whole class, but to hear them accidentally cue “squat for 2/2….actually I mean super slow!” is refreshing to me….because I know that person is real and human…just like me.

I have been working so hard to do everything 100%, do everything perfect, and it was turning me into a robot.  What kind of a life is that?  I wasn’t enjoying time with friends, I wasn’t just sitting back and relaxing, I wasn’t ever taking a night off, I wasn’t living my life…and that takes a lot of work.

So, from here on out I want to be true to you, true to my group fitness classes, true to my family, true to Brian, true to my friends and be the real ME!  The real me is someone who loves to eat healthy, try new recipes and workouts, who loves ice cream and chocolate, who loves to bake for EVERYONE whenever there is an opportunity, who hopes to inspire others to try a new vegetable or workout for an extra 30 minutes.

Now, this doesn’t mean that I am going to go and eat a big old McDonald’s hamburger with all the toppings, a large fry, soda, and a chocolate milkshake on the side…because that is not me either.  But, if a friend calls me up and asks to meet up for ice cream or a drink, I am not going to stress because it wasn’t in the “plan.”  I am going to be so happy to see that friend and truly enjoy my time with him or her.

It is crazy how it suddenly hit me last night, but I am so HAPPY that I finally realized what was wrong in my life.  A saying that I heard once that will always stick with me is “Everything in moderation, including moderation”  Hello!  How brilliant is that?!  Thank you to whoever came up with that, because I need  a little moderation on my “moderation.”

So, here is to Monday and starting off the week on a new foot.  Boy, does that feel good!

Minnie’s Diner

Posted on

Yesterday morning, Mom and I had a breakfast date at a new-to-us eatery, Minnie’s Diner.

About seven weeks ago, one of my mom’s good friends, Teresa, found out that Minnie’s Diner was on the market for sale.  She had been a long time friend of Minnie and was a frequent guest of the restaurant.

When Minnie was running the show, this little diner was quite the happening place.  There were regular customers, new comers, and everyone was more than welcome.  After Minnie lost her battle to cancer nearly five years ago, the restaurant simply didn’t have the same heart and passion that Minnie brought to it, and the restaurant’s business began to suffer.

Since purchasing the diner, Teresa and her partners, have put so much effort into completely revamping the restaurant and getting everything back in business.  This past Tuesday July 17 was the first new day of business, and things have been rolling ever since.

After our little visit, I would have to say that their efforts have been a success!!

The menu consists of breakfast and lunch dishes including eggs, omelettes, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, grilled chicken sandwiches, burgers, and a ton of other delicious items.

All of the food is cooked right in front of you, with the customers having front row seats to the kitchen and the opportunity to chat with the restaurant staff as the meals are prepared.

Teresa and her son cooking breakfast

Mom and I both opted for the veggie omelettes.  Mom’s came with extra potatoes and a side of toast.

I opted for the delicious veggie omelette as well, and a large bowl of plain oats.

Overall, it was a great experience.  The staff was kind, accommodating, and very friendly.  I can’t wait to see where the new management and staff will take Minnie’s.

So, if you are ever in Fort Wayne, stop into Minnie’s diner and check out what the menu has to offer!  You won’t be disappointed.
