An Australian Skirt

Posted on

Today, I wore a very special skirt. the thing that makes it so special is that Brian’s aunt made it for me.  In 3 days!

While traveling on the cruise, one of my favorite spots that we stopped was Sydney, Australia.

On our last trip to Sydney, I walked around for a while by myself waiting to meet up with a friend who lives in Sydney.  There just happened to be a market with a ton of arts, crafts, hand made goods, and tasty looking food.  I couldn’t resist when the first booth I saw was full of beautiful patterned skirts (much like the one that I am wearing from Brian’s Aunt).  The woman’s stall was called Gigi’s Fairy Fashion’s , and as we started chatting we instantly hit it off.  She had me trying on skirts over my shorts, putting on belts, and holding up shoes…and then I saw the one.  The perfect skirt for me.

I don’t know what came over me because I am usually very frugal with my money.  The skirt cost $165….but I didn’t care.  It was the perfect skirt to wear with a tank top, boots, heels, a sweater, cardigan, anything…and the fabric was gorgeous…so I bought it!

I am wearing the skirt!

Gigi (of Gigi’s Fairy Fashion’s) told me that she hand makes each of the pieces that she sells, and she started by making these pieces for her daughters.  Eventually, her daughters’ friends wanted these wonderful skirts, and in 1996 Gigi was making enough skirts to start a business!  I don’t regret purchasing the skirt one single bit, and now I am glad that I have two!!

Thanks Aunt Erin 🙂

After work today, I stopped at the gas station and picked myself up a little treat…

When I start chewing gum…I can get pretty addicted and I had gone all week without it, so I decided today was the day to break down and chomp!

Special Night

Tonight is a very special night for two reasons:

  1. Erin is having her rehearsal dinner because she gets married tomorrow!!

This next year is going to fly, but I can hardly wait to marry my best friend.

Just after I said yes!

I want you to tell me about the biggest impulse buy you have ever made…did you feel guilty about??

Buckwheat Approval

Happy First Day of Fall!!!!

Yesterday, I was at work during the majority of the day so here is what I wore:

After work, Brian and I went downstairs to visit Caitlin and Julie, two of our good friends from Butler who just moved into our building!  We had a little wine, cookies (recipe to come later) and Modern Family.  It was relaxing and great to see good friends after a long day at work.

This morning I decided I would try out the Bob’s Red Mill Creamy Buckwheat Cereal.  I have made buckwheat pancakes before and absolutely loved them, but I didn’t know what to expect from the cereal.

Seriously, this stuff is great! I mixed together:

  • 1/4 cup buckwheat cereal
  • 3/4 cup water

I then microwaved it for 3 minutes and added:

Here are some interesting facts and benefits of buckwheat:
  • Buckwheat is a fruit not a grain and is completely wheat free
  • Buckwheat is a great plant source of protein (5g per 1/4 cup serving!)
  • Rich in lysine, an amino acid that is lacking in many grains
  • Eating buckwheat may keep you fuller longer, because it will keep glucose levels balanced better than other carbohydrates
Hope you all have a great first day of fall and kickoff to the weekend.
This weekend is Chelsea’s wedding weekend!  Gotta go pack!! 🙂

Yoga Pose is Back!!

Body Pump on Monday’s doesn’t begin until 9:25.  There are definitely pros and cons of having it later in the mornings.

  • Not worrying about setting an alarm clock
  • Plenty of time to eat breakfast before
  • It is light out and I can ride my bike
  • I can get a couple of things done before class
  • I feel a little like I have to wait around for class
  • I miss a good portion of the Today show
  • I really like waking up and banging my workout out first thing
Pros and cons aside…it was still a good and challenging class.

My Body Pump set up

Yoga Pose of the Day
It’s back!  Sorry about the weekend long hiatus, but Yoga Pose is back and ready for action!
Today’s pose is Upward-Facing Dog
**That is my Bic Band in my hair…and I love it!   Really, they don’t slide around.
Benefits of Upward-Facing Dog:  Strengthens the legs, buttocks, torso, shoulders, arms, and wrists, opens the chest increasing lung capacity, stretches the shoulders and back, lengthens the spine and opens the abdominal cavity, stimulates teh digestive and lymphatic systems, improves posture.
I then made myself a little smoothie bowl for lunch. Chocolate Peanut Butter to be exact, with a little spinach and banana thrown into the mix.

And now I am off to work for a couple of hours….this is another one of those days that really feels like three because it is broken up so weird!

Pump Motivation

Good Morning!

This morning, I woke up bright and early to head to the gym before work.  I did 20 minutes on the elliptical, then I had the most amazing Body Pump class ever.

I have been trying to up my weight every time because I am still getting used to the class and trying to figure out where I should be.  Today’s class was tough, but the instructor was by far the best one I have had yet!  She was peppy, motivating, funny, annnd she sang along with the songs.  Needless to say, I really liked her style!

I then came home for a quick breakfast of some overnight oats that were like an oatmeal raisin cookie.  Yum!

This morning’s bowl included:

  • Oats
  • Raisins
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Splenda
  • Granola
I put that all in the bowl last night with some water, then this morning I added some more granola for crunch and frozen banana.  Such a yummy and energizing breakfast bowl.

Sorry about the short leave of absence.  I had to stay later at work last night than expected and go in earlier than expected this morning!

Here are the latest work outfits.

Sorry about the blurry quality!

It’s All About Perspective

Yesterday, at work we had an unexpected visit from a manager that monitors several stores throughout the area.  This caught me, and the rest of my team off guard because the store wasn’t looking it’s best because we were planning on redoing the floor plan for the current season later that night (which is why I stayed late and came in early).  It was also the first time I had been on the floor as manager on duty without another manager there to cover me if I needed help or had a question.

At first, I was nervous.  I didn’t want to say or do anything wrong, but as soon as I actually met him we somehow got on the subject of spinning classes and running and found that we had a lot in common outside of work.  This totally took the edge off of the situation and made me remember “Hello!  He is just a person doing his job, following the rules he has been given, and doing what someone else above him is telling him to do.”  Throughout the visit he asked me various questions, presented various scenarios, and gave me advice on things to work on with the rest of the team.  I never once felt the need to make excuses or that he was being overly critical.  I know that our store works really hard to produce the numbers that it produces, and that it is his job to find something for us to work on to push us a little bit harder to take us to the next level.  I gave my feedback and agreed when I felt appropriate.

When two other managers came in though, they totally felt 180 degrees opposite of me.  The first thing out of their mouths after any comment he would make was a rebuttal and I could tell that they felt like it was necessary to be in defense mode.

At first, I was confused because to me, this man seemed so nice and like he our store and the company in his best interest….then I realized…it is all about perspective.

It is hard for anyone to take harsh criticism, but I truly feel that it is all in the way you spin it.  This was a huge learning moment for me being able to see how another person reacts completely different in the same situation.  I know that we all know everyone has a different view, perspective, and opinion but for some reason this situation totally impacted me.  Because of this, when I feel the need to defend or have frustration towards a certain situation I am going to make the effort to view it in another perspective.

Have you had a situation where someone reacted in a completely opposite way then you would have??

Ok, so because of a lack of sleep I am feeling less than motivated to go to the Pilates class I was originally planning on today, but no worries!  Remember though, it is good to build rest days into your usual weekly workout routine 🙂

My Brother is a TV Star!

Ok, so the performing gene runs in the family and my brother was in an ESPN college football commercial as Purdue Pete…check it out!

Got my Band

Good Tuesday Morning!

My sweaty early morning workouts are back!

I started off the day with an hour and fifteen minute cycle class, and it was suuuuper sweaty.  Just how I like it 🙂  I will have to say though that I am pretty sure that my butt is going to be sore because those seats were not nearly as cushioned as the ones I used at Butler.

Yesterday, I received another package in the mail:

I received my B.I.C. Band!  If you haven’t heard of these head bands, they are specially made so that they are tight on your head (but not too tight) and don’t slip off while working out (or doing anything else)!  I tested it out this morning in spinning and I was completely satisfied with the non-slip grip of the headband.

The proceeds from each BIC Band are donated to a different charity each month.  What a neat way to help people out 🙂

I got the gun metal sparkle skinnie minnie.  So cute!

Work, Dinner, Get Ready

Work today went by pretty reasonably, not too fast and not too slow.  I think that my favorite thing that a co-worker brought in were pumpkin brownies with a cream cheese icing…I’m going to have to get the recipe!

Work Fashion

I wore the pants that fit so well today!

I then came home and made a simple easy dinner of a chocolate strawberry smoothie bowl:

And a salad with cannellini beans, pepperoncini, red onion, tomato, celery, carrots, romaine, and salsa.

Now, I have to go get ready for one of my good friend’s (who lives in the same apartment complex) housewarming parties!! AHH…speed hair, makeup and picking out of clothes (the hardest part)…ready, go!

MIA…but Now I’m Back!

Good Morning!

Sorry I went MIA yesterday, I was called into work early and didn’t get home until after 11pm….long story short I was dog tired.

So tired in fact, that I did not wake up early to go to a workout class today, so I plan on running 3 miles and doing some ab exercises later this morning.

I do have to say though that Body Pump was amazing yesterday, and I can’t wait for the next class!

Let’s do a little recap of yesterday…

Yesterday Lunch

Lunch was a little random yesterday because I was preparing the salad I was making for dinner so the flavors could meld I was called into work.

I ate some steamed green beans (leftover from the salad I was making), apple slices, and cauliflower with hummus. Random, but tasty.

Yesterday’s Dinner

Sorry the picture really doesn’t do it justice, but this salad is delicious.  Unfortunately, because I was in a rush it was more of an experiment where I was just throwing things together and tasting as I go, so I can’t share a recipe with exact measurements with you 😦  Here is what was in my delicious dinner salad.

  • Blanched green beans
  • Tomato
  • Red pepper
  • Red onion
  • Cannellini beans
  • Canned salmon
  • White wine vinegar
  • Garlic salt
  • Pepper
  • Dried basil
It was so tasty!  I then had a side of cereal….random I know.
When I was standing in the massage line after the half marathon last Saturday, a woman wearing a Wheaties shirt that I had seen running the race was passing out samples of Wheaties Fuel cereal because she was actually sponsored by them.  I’ve told you before how I react when someone offers free items…somehow my Mom and I ended up with three boxes.
This cereal is seriously delicious!  I just ate it plain as like a trail mix, and I think that it would make a great snack or munchy anytime of the day.  It was crisp, sweet, and didn’t have very much of the traditional “wheatie” taste.  The woman giving out the samples said that she actually ate them before the race for breakfast and felt like it kept her full and gave her energy for the race.  Sounds like a good deal to me!
Breakfast Today
I started off the day with a peanut butter banana smoothie (with spinach in it of course).
Now, I’m off for my morning run…don’t worry the Yoga Pose for today will be on the blog soon 🙂

If the Pant Fits…

Since I didn’t show you a picture earlier, here was my work outfit today (I’ve worn it before)

I have the worst time shopping for pants…so I rarely ever by them.  The pants in the above picture are from 4 years ago…and if pants never wore out or got holes in them  you better believe that I would probably still be wearing the same pants from middle school (not much has changed in the hip department).

Usually pants are too short or too baggie in the hips.  Today, we got two new pair of black dress pants in at work.  The style that we all keep hearing about promoting in our store is the long black pant for everyday and mixing and matching it with a variety of different tops.

I decided to go out on a limb and try these pants on.  The first pair was waaaay to short…Steve Urkel anyone??

I tried on the second pair and they fit perfectly!  They hugged my hips like they were supposed to, were the perfect length for heels and flats, and they came higher on the waste so they were extremely comfortable!  I put them on hold because Brian was waiting outside for me, and I think I am going to buy them Monday 🙂  Trust me, this made my day!

Lunch was random again…

Mixed nuts, rice cakes, and veggies.  I also snacked on another Nature Valley granola bar in the back room when I could.

Today was the last official day of running in my half marathon training schedule before the race.  Tomorrow is a rest day and I want to take full advantage of it.  I want to feel my best on Saturday.  I know that I am not competing to win (this time! 😉 ) but I want to be able to feel good and do well for me.  Feeling soreness and tightness in my legs on Saturday would just throw a wrench in things.

I ran about 2 miles and then walked a little bit.  After literally standing all day, my legs get tight and my feet get tired which has such an effect on my running.  It was also in the 90s temperature wise, and I was hungry for dinner so everything was against me.  It is crazy how this run felt physically harder than my 13 mile run this past Saturday, which is all the more reason for me to take care of myself now in preparation!

I then came home to throw a hodge-podge of things together for dinner.  Because it was burning outside, I made a peanut butter banana spinach chocolate smoothie along with steamed cabbage, potatoes, and cauliflower.  Random…but it tasted good!

I know that I am going to fall asleep early again tonight (I slept through the movie last night) and want to get the grocery list made because tomorrow is grocery day, and I am going to Trader Joe’s!  I can’t wait 🙂

Not The Triangle

Posted on

Good Hump Day Morning!

I started off the day with the usual…

On my final week of training schedule for the half marathon, today was either a 3 mile run or cross training.  Since I work at 9am today and don’t like running in the dark I opted for the cross training.  I followed this workout from

  • 20 jumping Jacks
  • 10 burpees
  • 20 lunges
  • 5 minute jog
  • 10 push-ups
  • 10 dips
  • 20 lunges
  • 5 minute jog
  • 20 second plank on hands
  • 20 tummy tucks
  • 5 minute jog
  • 20 bicycle crunches
Followed by 8 minute abs…this video is so 90’s but I love it!
It’s that time…Yoga Pose of the Day:  Today’s pose, The Extended Side Angle

Slightly Modified

The benefits of triangle are improved digestion and circulation, help with menopausal discomfort, relief from sciatica symptoms, stretches the arches, calves, hamstrings, and groin, lengthens the spine, increases muscular endurance.
