Breakfast Before or After?

Good Morning!

This Morning, I woke up bright and early (well it was actually still dark out) to go to Body Pump. Today, I had my favorite instructor who is great at motivating and pushing everyone to their limit!

After Body Pump, I came home and showered so that I could get ready for the work day.

I made myself my first bowl of fall oats…Oatmeal, pumpkin, cinnamon, splenda, and almond butter…delish

I then thought about the age-old question…Should we eat before or after a workout?

In my personal research and fitness education I have learned that one never wants to workout on an empty stomach, such as first thing in the morning when our body is in starvation mode. I have had instructors suggest that I eat a half of granola bar, piece of fruit, or something small to “get me going” or get my metabolism started so that I can totally maximize my workout.

But then what about eating after? I have also learned that the first 45 minutes after a workout are the prime time for eating because your body can digest and metabolize things better. So what is the consensus? I find that eating a little bit before and a little bit after works for me…What works for you??

Do you eat before or after a workout or both??? What is your reasoning???

Pump Motivation

Good Morning!

This morning, I woke up bright and early to head to the gym before work.  I did 20 minutes on the elliptical, then I had the most amazing Body Pump class ever.

I have been trying to up my weight every time because I am still getting used to the class and trying to figure out where I should be.  Today’s class was tough, but the instructor was by far the best one I have had yet!  She was peppy, motivating, funny, annnd she sang along with the songs.  Needless to say, I really liked her style!

I then came home for a quick breakfast of some overnight oats that were like an oatmeal raisin cookie.  Yum!

This morning’s bowl included:

  • Oats
  • Raisins
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Splenda
  • Granola
I put that all in the bowl last night with some water, then this morning I added some more granola for crunch and frozen banana.  Such a yummy and energizing breakfast bowl.

RACE DAY!

Today is officially race day!

I went to bed early last night because I wanted rest and I knew that I would be anxious and would have a difficult time getting adequate sleep in.  Waking up a couple of times throughout the night didn’t stop me from jumping out of bed when the alarm went off at 4:55am.

I had prepared my breakfast the night before, a jar of overnight oats with half of a frozen banana, which is what I have eaten all throughout training and I knew that it would be quick and easy for me to eat and digest all before race time at 7am.

Even though I completed 13 miles last week, I am so nervous for today.  Partly because I felt like this last weekend after the run…

Not feelin' too good

And partly because I don’t even know why!  I am going to try to make things as normal and as much like my training runs as possible.  So, even though there are 12 water stops…I am bringing my own water.  Even though there is a refuel food station,  I am bringing my energy beans.

I have been preparing for 2 months now, I know I can do it.  I am excited-nervous-anxious-scared-happy-alloftheabove when it comes to emotions!!

WISH ME AND LAUREN (one of my sorority sisters is doing it with me!!) LUCK!!

Yoga Goof

Happy September!

September just sounds like fall, doesn’t it?!

First things first…I made an error yesterday and all of you yogis out there were probably cringing.  I originally said that the Pose of the Day yesterday was the triangle, when in fact, it is the extended side angle.  Sorry I goofed!  But don’t worry I corrected it on the post and the page under the workout tab.

Today, I woke up with tight hamstrings and wanting to run.  Since I can’t run until after work because of the sun not rising early enough, I did a little stretching with some yoga poses and some crunches to get my core warmed up.

Yoga Pose of the Day:  Crescent Lunge

Slightly modified

I could really feel this stretch in my hip flexors while doing the final pose.  This pose was also really great for me today because of the tightness in my hamstrings.  Starting off in downward facing dog definitely gave my hammies a stretch 😉

Benefits of Crescent Lunge:  Strengthens the arches, ankles, knees, and thighs, stretches the hips and shoulders, opens the chest, stimulates digestion, increases muscular endurance, relieves symptoms of sciatica.

Breakfast

I then had an oatmeal bowl for breakfast…voluminous overnight oats to be exact, with a frozen banana on top.

It tasted like peanut butter cookie dough 😉

Now, I am off to my first day of work in this brand new month!

Anyone have a good website or store to buy nice shoes for a reasonable price??? I am searching for gray bridesmaid shoes for Chelsea’s wedding and I need help!

Pumpkins are Back!

Posted on

Hello!

So today I literally woke up at 3:45am because I had to be to work b 5am….that means I didn’t shower 😉 I started the day off with overnight oats so that I didn’t have to prepare anything this morning.  Even though I am a morning person waking up in the 3’s is definitely stretch for me.

Work was great…but sorry no picture…oops!!

Because we were at work for so long and so early me and the other two managers got a break.  So on our way to the bank we stopped at Einstein Bagels.  I went in not really knowing what to order because I was hungry since I ate breakfast at 4:30am, but as soon as I walked in I knew exactly what I wanted.  Pumpkins had invaded Einstein Bagels in the form of Pumpkin bagels, schmear, bagel bites, muffins, and my favorite…Pumpkin Latte!  I ordered it nonfat no-whip and it totally hit the spot 🙂  I LOVE pumpkin, it truly speaks fall to me.  I almost feel guilty eating it any other time of the year…so as soon as I see it in the seasonal products I go crazy for it.

After coming home, I was pretty hungry so I actually had something to eat…the leftovers from Brian’s lunch!  Quaker rice cakes, homemade hummus, and veggies.  It was tasty, and gave me energy to do an hour of pilates.  The pilates routine I did today was almost more like a giant stretch session and felt great since I am running on little sleep.

Now, Brian and I are headed to the store to exchange my first pair of jeggings.  After wearing them the first time, they got a snag in them.  Since I got them at the store I work at, my manager said to just call another store with my size and exchange them because it is “flawed product.”  I am not going to argue with her on that since I only wore them once and they already have a string loose!

Training Isn’t Always Pretty

Posted on

I woke up today ready to run!

I started out with an overnight bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter to give me fuel for my final long run of training.

My mom is part of a walking group, and today they were walking 6 miles so I went with them to see what I could do.  Originally, I thought that I was going to do the 6 mile loupe twice and possibly walk the last mile since 11 miles was on the schedule for the day.  I ended up finding a group of runners that were doing the half marathon loupe so I joined up with them!

I started off running right behind another girl that seemed to have a pace pretty similar to mine.  After about 3 miles I lost her and was on my own.  There was a group of three people a ways in front of me that I had been following for the entire run as well.  Although the trail was marked, I still didn’t really know where I was going so I told myself to stay behind them the entire time.  After getting to about mile 8, I caught right up to them!!  My pace was under 10 minutes the entire time, which is faster than usual for me on these long runs 🙂  When I caught up to them, they realized they didn’t know where they were going and I didn’t know where I was going either, so we stuck together in order to figure it out.

Throughout my training for the half marathon I have been doing my long runs (well all of my runs for that matter) by myself just listening to my iPod.  Once I started running with them, I turned off the iPod and I was surprised by the fact that I was able to carry on a conversation after running nearly 10 miles!  It was great to have company, especially experienced company that pushed my pace a bit.  After talking for a while, we realized that I went to high school with the son of one of the men and he is dating one of my best friend’s from high school’s younger sister….small world!!

I opted not to walk the last 1 or 2 miles because I was feeling so great.  Colin (one of my new friends) and I sped up a little bit faster than Len and Tiffany (the other two running friends) and finished with ease.

My new running buddy! 13 miles!

I then stretched out, and made sure to do a good job of it because jumping from 10 miles to 13 miles is a big leap, but I know I will be in good shape for the race next Saturday.  Good news though…no chafing!  Thank you Body Glide!

Training isn’t always Pretty

I felt pretty good afterwards and came right home to shower.  After showering I started blow drying my hair, and then suddenly I just did NOT feel good.  I didn’t eat right afterwards because my stomach felt a little strange and I didn’t want to upset it, but I think that was a bad idea.  I made myself a little glass of chocolate milk to replenish my body with blood sugar and protein, but that just didn’t quite do the trick.  I layed down on the couch to just close my eyes and try to  cool down.  I think the blow dryer overheated me.

Not feelin' too good

My mom then gave me raisins, peanuts, and chocolate chips along with a fresh glass of ice water…just what the doctor ordered!!

Post run replenishment

It’s true, training isn’t always pretty…but I guess chocolate just makes everything better 😉

Now, mom and I are off to the grocery, picking up my brides maid dress (!!), hopefully replacing my camera, hitting up Taste of the Arts in downtown Fort Wayne, Chelsea’s open house, then Chelsea’s bachelorette party!! Should be a fun and busy day 🙂

Good Friday morning friends!

Today is officially the two month anniversary of my blog.  I wanted to do something special and fun for you in honor of this monumental (well to me 😉 ) day, and hosting my first giveaway seemed like the perfect idea.

With the theme of “firsts” lingering, I will be baking the winner the first recipe that I put on the blog.  Date Bars!  I love these bars as a quick breakfast on the go, crumbled over Greek yogurt or a smoothie bowl, as a little snack, or even dessert.  They are not too sweet and have a very soft texture.  So delicious!

In order to enter the giveaway you can do one of four things…or all four!  Many of you don’t comment on a regular basis, but I would love to hear your feedback so in order to enter you need to leave a separate comment for each entry.

  1. I have really enjoyed having this blog and sharing my ups and downs, recipes and workouts.  I am starting to feel the strong community that I have read about on other blogs for so long, and in order for me to build my community I want to do what makes YOU happy!  In order to do that your first entry will be to provide a little tip of advice or something you would like to see more of on the blog.  Examples:  More “guy” recipes, pictures with specific work out moves, more baking recipes, more how-to posts, more pictures of Brian (j/k) etc.
  2. For an additional entry or “extra credit” “like” my facebook page.  You can find it at the lower right hand portion of the sidebar.

The contest will be open until midnight tonight, so get those entries in quick!  Now, on to the usual things…workout and breakfast.
Workout
Last night, Brian and I ended up going on a 2 hour bike ride!  It was so fun.  We just talked and joked the entire time at a leisurely pace.  We got to see a beautiful view of the city that most people don’t really get to see.  Only people using the path at the specific time of evening get to see this pretty city.

This morning, I started out bright and early with an hour of pilates.  It felt great to start the day off right 🙂
Breakfast
For breakfast, I opted for oats this morning because I know that I won’t be able to eat lunch until 1:30 or 2 and I need something to hold me over until then.
I cooked oats mixed with splenda and vanilla extract.  I then mixed in 1 Tbsp of peanut butter and 1/8 cup of honey roasted peanuts.  Very satisfying!!
Work Fashion
Since I am using Brian’s camera things are a little different…like the self timer.  For some reason they all kept turning out blurry, and this was the best that came out.
**In case you were wondering…I am wearing jeggings for the first time 🙂
Happy Friday….and sign up for the giveaway!!!
